On September 28, 2014, Hong Kong police fired tear gas at peaceful demonstrators demanding free elections, triggering a mass protest that became known as the Umbrella Movement.
Over the ensuing weeks, residents across the city occupied major thoroughfares in a 79-day standoff that became a defining moment in Hong Kong’s decades-long struggle for democracy.
Many activists who emerged during the movement later helped drive Hong Kong’s broader push for democratic rights. But in 2020, Beijing imposed a sweeping National Security Law on the city, dismantling the democracy movement. Since then, the authorities have prosecuted numerous prominent figures on politically motivated charges and imposed long prison terms.
