THE CONFERENCE BOARD IS DEFINITELY WAITING FOR A FULL-FLEDGED RECESSION, THE LEI INDEX HAS BEEN FALLING FOR SIX MONTHS

The US Leading Indicators Index (LEI) calculated by the Conference Board decreased from July 116.6 to 116.2 points in August (-0.3% mm, -0.8% yy). In annual comparison, this is the first negative since February 2021

The company notes that “... economic activity will continue to slow significantly across the U.S. economy. The main reason for this slowdown was the rapid tightening of the Fed's monetary policy to counter inflationary pressures. Almost the only positive indicator in the index is the labor market. The Conference Board predicts a recession in the coming quarters...”

Chip production in China is growing faster than anywhere else in the world

Nineteen of the world's 20 fastest-growing chipmaking companies in the past four quarters are from China, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

Fed Funds futures markets see the last big rate hike this November, with rates peaking in April 2023.

The hike will stop at 4.375%.

REAL ESTATE IN THE WORLD IS LOSING INVESTMENT APPEAL

We regularly cite housing price statistics where we have recorded a reversal of the upward trend, not least due to higher credit conditions, decreasing personal income, as well as declining investment attractiveness of "keeping money in concrete"

According to Bloomberg and Corelogic, similar trends are occurring in many other locations around the world, including where real estate prices have been rising ahead of the curve in the past few years. Rather sensitive declines from highs are underway in New Zealand's Auckland, Sweden's Stockholm, and Australia's Sydney. The trend has also begun to reverse in Toronto, Canada. Obviously, these overheated markets are experiencing, among other things, the elementary implosion of the bloated bubble.

Retail sales (blue) increased by 9.1% YoY, but taking into account consumer prices (orange), real sales increased by only 0.9%

The analysis showed that the true cost of maintaining wind and solar power is $272 per MWh and $472 per MWh, taking into account "load balancing," that is, storage costs as well as rebuilding and curtailment costs.

Wind and solar power are much more expensive than the power plants they replace. ESG🧐

#macro #USA.

💥 The annual U.S. inflation rate fell for the second straight month to 8.3% in August 2022, the lowest level in 4 months, from 8.5% in July, but that's above market forecasts of 8.1%.

👉 The energy index rose 23.8%, up from 32.9% in July.

👉 Smaller increases were recorded for gasoline (25.6% vs. 44%) and fuel oil (68.8% vs. 75.6%), while inflation accelerated for natural gas (33% vs. 30.5%) and electricity (15.8%, the highest since August 1981).

👉 Inflation rose on food (11.4%, the highest since 1979), housing (6.2%, the highest since 1984) and used cars and trucks (7.8%).

👉 The core consumer price index, which excludes volatile energy and food prices, rose 6.3% year-over-year, the highest since March, and up markedly from the 5% level.

THE COST OF CONTAINER TRANSPORTATION - A STRONG REDUCTION IN TARIFFS IN THE CHINESE DIRECTION

One of the key indicators of the state of world trade is the container transportation index https://www.drewry.co.uk/supply-chain-advisors/supply-chain-expertise/world-container-index-assessed-by-drewry , at the end of last week decreased by $283, this is 5% week/week (vs a decrease of $324 a week earlier) up to $5,379 per container, the downward trend is still quite stable

Tariffs from China have significantly decreased, for example, on the route from Shanghai to Los Angeles, the weekly decrease was 14% (!). Tension in supply chains continues to decrease.

BBG: Tariffs for sea transportation on the main trade routes have fallen by more than half since the beginning of this year, which is a potential sign of easing inflationary pressure and eliminating supply chain problems
