An Open Letter to Mrs Helen Yu, Maryknoller and member of the Independent Police Complaints Council- In response to Mrs Helen Yu’s recent statements since her appointment to the Independent Police Complaints Council (IPCC), almost 800 students and alumni of Maryknoll Convent School (MCS) wrote an open letter to her and published it in Chinese and English newspapers today (17 September).
- The letter mentions the vision and mission of MCS being an upholder of freedom and equality in education.Mrs Yu’s recent deeds and words, however, belie the school motto, ‘Sola Nobilitas Virtus’. She describes herself as apolitical and disregards the inadequacy of IPCC for a fact-finding job against the backdrop of grave institutional injustice.
- The signatories urge her to embrace the Maryknoll spirit, scrutinise police brutality, and respond to Hongkongers’ cries with empathy and humility.
- Letters aside, the artwork of the English version deliberately takes out the ‘y’ from ‘Carrying truth’, with the ardent hope that Mrs Helen Yu will find her way back to join her fellow Maryknollers, to fulfill her first duty to seek and carry truth.
