German Foreign Minister calls for ceasefire

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock, during a high-profile visit to Israel, urged an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, highlighting that military action alone cannot resolve the conflict.

Baerbock met with Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz and emphasized the dangers of relying solely on force, especially after last weekend's tragic deaths of six hostages during an Israeli rescue mission. "Pure military pressure endangers the lives of the hostages," she warned, calling for diplomacy to be prioritized to secure their safe release.

Acknowledging Israel’s security concerns, particularly around the volatile Philadelphi corridor bordering Egypt, Baerbock expressed Germany and the EU's readiness to assist with European Union Border Assistance Mission (EUBAM) Rafah efforts. She stressed, "Solutions can be found together."

Baerbock’s call for immediate action was clear – “It needs a ceasefire now” – as tensions between Israeli military operations and Hamas continue to escalate.

The gorillas at Berlin Zoo are probably unaware of their important role in modern science and the protection of their endangered relatives in the wild.

But they are currently participants in an artificial intelligence research project that aims to improve the protection of the endangered western lowland gorilla.

The Hasso Plattner Institute (HPI) and Zoo Berlin on Thursday (September 5) presented the project at the zoo, where three cameras are installed in the outdoor enclosures until the end of September to collect data.

"We need to really track the population and make sure that the developments are healthy. And so the idea is to set up cameras in different locations and track what is going on and immediately see when there's a new disease or if certain gorillas have disappeared," explained project leader Gerard de Melo from the Department of Artificial Intelligence & Intelligent Systems at the HPI.

The prison population in England and Wales hit a record 88,521, as overcrowding continues to strain the system. In response, the government plans to expand early release programs this month to alleviate the pressure.

With nearly 150 prisoners per 100,000 people, Britain has Western Europe’s highest incarceration rate—25% higher than countries like France, Spain, and Italy, and more than double the rates in Germany and the Netherlands. In comparison, the U.S. has a far higher rate at 531 per 100,000.

To address the crisis, ministers are exploring the possibility of transferring prisoners to Estonia, where low crime rates have left its prisons half-empty.

Estonia has offered its spare prison capacity to other countries, which could help the UK manage overcrowding while providing Estonia with a €30 million (£25 million) boost to its public finances.

The Ministry of Justice claims to be considering all options to prevent the prison system from reaching its breaking point.
