【As Carrie Lam Refuses to Meet, Healthcare Continues to Strike】
Yesterday (4th February), the Hospital Authority Employees Alliance (HAEA) has invited Carrie Lam to meet publicly today. Yet, our multiple invitations are all rejected by her one by one. Although the HAEA has come to the Central Government Offices today, hoping for a conversation regarding infection control with Carrie Lam, the Chairperson of the Emergency Response Level Steering Committee cum Command Centre, the sincerity of the HAEA is again met with the disregard of the government. The HAEA has handed in petition letters on behalf of our members and frontline healthcare workers, yet the HAEA must reiterate that the government, led by Carrie Lam, must meet with us publicly. In order to safeguard the lives of the Hong Kong people, the government should implement full closure of border as soon as possible.
In face of an overwhelming demand to close up our border among the people of Hong Kong, the government chose to remain blind and mute. Carrie Lam once stated that healthcare workers should have an earnest and sincere talk with the government, yet she now turns her back on her words uttered publicly. The HAEA must state again our Five Demands, in which we severely urge the government the fully close up our border, and to tackle the tremendous shortage of resources within the Hospital Authority.
As the disease is rapidly spreading in our community, and locally-infected cases are steadily increasing, we are dangerously close to a massive community outbreak comparable to SARS. The members of the HAEA are willing to risk their career and financial income to convince the government into closure of our border, and to put the lives of the citizens of Hong Kong at the highest priority. Yet, the government’s refusal to listen to the voices of the people is deeply angering and heartbreaking to us. If the government chooses to be the enemies of the people and continues to ignore the safety of the Hong Kong citizens, the HAEA believes other unions of different labour sectors will not exclude the possibility to initiate industrial actions of their own, in order to continue our fight in pressuring the government.
The HAEA will be holding a press conference tonight with other unions.
Five Demands of the HAEA:
Regarding the below two points, the HAEA urges the Hospital Authority to issue a public statement to pressure the government into actions –
1. To forbid all travelers from entering Hong Kong via China
2. To implement constructive measures to ensure a sufficient supply of masks
Regarding the below three points, the HAEA urges the Hospital Authority to ensure a safe working environment for its staff -
3. To provide sufficient isolation wards, to stop all non-emergency services
4. To provide sufficient support and facilitation for healthcare staff caring for patients under isolation
5. To publicly commit to not taking any disciplinary actions in retaliation
