Condemnation of Hong Kong Police Force unlawful obstruction of legal prayer assembly and petition procession
- The Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act Prayer Assembly had received a “Letter Of No Objection” from HKPF to hold a peaceful assembly at Chater Garden between 1:30 and 6:30 pm on September 8, 2019, and to lead a procession towards the US Consulate at 2:30pm to submit a petition letter and a signed banner.
- Unexpectedly at 4:45pm, the HKPF ordered the assembly to disband within 30 minutes. As participants proceeded to leave as per police orders, HKPF shut down major MTR stations, thus entrapping assembly attendees. The police then started to assault people at the scene and make unlawful arrests.
- Assembly organizers call on the US Government and the US congress to condemn the HK SAR Government for their clear violation of Hong Kong people’s rights to assembly and demonstration.
- We urge the US Congress to help safeguard basic human rights of the Hong Kong people by passing the Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy act immediately upon its return on September 9th, and imposing the most stringent sanctions on all bodies and individuals complicit in undermining democracy, human rights and freedom in Hong Kong.
