Follow-up on the Teaching and Learning Arrangement for Semester B, 2020/21
As regards the adoption of a mixed mode of teaching (face-to-face and online in parallel) for Semester B, 2020/21, the Office of Provost has issued a mass email to all teaching staff and students on 25 November to explain.
◆ Lectures with less than 40 students, tutorials and lab sessions would be delivered face-to-face.
◆ For lectures with 40 to 120 students, students would attend the face-to-face lecture on a rotational basis.
◆ Lectures with more than 120 students would be delivered online.
◆ Students residing in Hong Kong are expected to attend the face-to-face sessions.
On 24 December, the University announced that students may apply for online learning (so that no face-to-face classes are required) in between 29 December to 2 January via AIMS. The application should include “proper justification”.
In view of the uncertainty of the pandemic, the SU raised several suggestions, which are:
1. Extending the deadline for applying online learning (from 2 January) to 8 January.
2. Allowing students to opt for online learning unless the course has special reason to require face-to-face classes.
3. allowing students to opt for online learning in face-to-face sessions arranged on a rotational basis.
4. allowing all students (irrespective of under online / offline learning mode) to access to the class recordings.
5. Ensuring sufficient space in face-to-face lecture theater / classrooms to keep social distancing.
6. suspending all face-to-face sessions in case the pandemic gets worsened.
The Office of Provost has replied as follows:
● Application for online learning will be in 2 phases:
1st phase – between 29 December to 2 January
2nd phase – during add-drop period (details will be announced via CAP message)
● The University and departments will depend on the application of 1st phase to arrange the face-to-face teaching arrangement. If students do not wish to attend face-to-face lectures on a rotational basis, they may apply for online teaching.
● The University would continue to monitor the pandemic and follow government measures.
The SU noted that some departments have decided to suspend all face-to-face sessions in the coming weeks. Students are advised to check the latest announcement from the University, departments and course leaders.
